Work in New Zealand
International student are allowed to work in New Zealand under certain conditions.
Deciding to Work in New Zealand while studying there can be a good way to get work experience and earn extra money to help pay the bills. It can also help international students meet other people. However, before applying for a job it is very important to check if international student is allowed to work in New Zealand.
If an international student is enrolled in a full-time undergraduate study programme, the student may be allowed to work 20 hours per week during the course of studies and full-time during scheduled breaks in study.
Note: some postgraduate students are eligible to work full-time (enrolled in Masters by research or doctoral degree programmes)
If an international student wishes to stay in New Zealand after graduation, New Zealand’s immigration policies include a post-study work pathway for international students.
There are two types of work visa specifically for students who have completed studies in New Zealand:
- The Post-study work visa (open). This gives you up to 12 months to find a job that is relevant to your studies
- The Post-study work visa (employer assisted). This option lets you work in a specific job, which must be relevant to your studies, for two more years.
